Title Environmental sustainability - how does borderless higher education measure up?
Author Carolyn Walker - OBHE Associate; Consultant in International HE; Former Academic Director, INTO

Abstract

The UN sustainable development goals for 2030 include improving education and awareness-raising on the need to act on climate change. At the U.N. climate change conference in Paris (the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, known as COP 21) on November 30 to December 12, 2015, there was an agreement on action which, among other statements, affirmed the importance of the role of education.

What are the implications of the globally-oriented environmental sustainability targets for those entities of particular interest to the Observatory – that is, transnational education in all its forms including online learning, branch campuses, private for-profit operations, and public-private partnerships? To what extent have they built action for climate change and the environment into their operations?
