Abstract

More than 150 years since universities first established international branch campuses, models have evolved and diversified in terms of size, scope, ownership, and support framework. But in all the variety of transnational education (TNE) around the world, what exactly distinguishes an IBC? This article explores the question of definition, placing IBCs in a broader typology of ‘foreign higher education outposts’—including operations which resemble branch campuses but also exhibit important differences.
