Title IBC Series, Reflections from 8 years on an International Branch Campus, Part I: Students: “Same Same but Different”

Abstract

International Branch Campuses (IBCs) attract a great deal of attention in the world of transnational education and, while growing in number, still represent a minor component of the overall picture. It is perhaps only natural that they should garner such interest as they represent a major higher education initiative, are ripe with opportunities for success and failure; and raise questions about quality of education, cultural interaction and distance management. They involve foreign ministries and governments. They are the same as the home campus but not the same. They are costly and time consuming and often little understood.

This series of articles will look at one clear success story, The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus from the perspective of a member of staff who worked on the campus as Director of the Graduate School from January 2008 to August 2012 and Director of Research Training and Academic Development from September 2012 to December 2015.

The articles will examine key elements of the branch campus process and development cycle and focus on the following areas of interest:

- The Student Experience
- Faculty: Research and Teaching
- Administration and Staffing Issues
- Host Nation: Accreditation and Regulation
- Home Campus: Perception and Integration
- Exchange and Knowledge Transfer

These articles will provide an overview and analysis of the challenges and opportunities of the past eight years of development and a reflective discussion as to the next stage of campus growth.

Part 1: Students: “Same Same but Different”

The University of Nottingham in the UK was one of the pioneers in the world of International Branch Campuses (IBCs). The University established their branch in Malaysia in 2000 when there was little in the way of models to emulate or guidelines to follow and so represents an ideal case study to discuss growth and lessons learned. The University of Nottingham Malaysia has firmly demonstrated that it is not a fad but rather ‘in it for the long haul’. A significant commitment has been made to the process of campus development, integration within the national agenda and a deeper understanding of the institution and the value of international education. Key questions to consider include the changing nature of the student experience; the quality of teaching and learning; subject and degree evolution; and future growth of the campus.
