Author Richard Garrett; Kevin Kinser; Jason E Lane; Rachael Merola - The OBHE and Cross-Border Education Research Team (C-BERT) at the State University of New York at Albany and Pennsylvania State University

Abstract

This is the second of a two-part report. The first part was published in 2016 and is available here:

http://www.obhe.ac.uk/documents/view_details?id=1035

This second part offers updated statistics on IBC spread and development and dives deeper into the question of what leads some IBCs to succeed while others struggle. The report reveals that there are 263 IBCs in existence in November 2017, up from 249 in November 2016. One-hundred thirty (49%) of these institutions are at least ten years old. We focus on these “mature” campuses, founded prior to 2007, using interviews with leaders from IBCs and their home institutions to better understand what has led to their successful operation over the past 10+ years.

IBCs profiled include:

1. Curtin University (Curtin University, Malaysia)
2. ESSEC Business School (ESSEC Asia-Pacific)
3. Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech- Lorraine)
4. Heriot-Watt University (Heriot-Watt University Dubai)
5. Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT Vietnam)
6. University of Kent (Brussels School of International Studies, University of Kent)
7. University of Nottingham (University of Nottingham Ningbo China; University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus)
8. Webster University (Webster University, Geneva Campus; Webster University Vienna Campus)
