Title ‘Storms don’t last forever’ ? Malaysian public universities weather big budget cuts

In October 2016, the Malaysian government announced funding cuts to public universities for 2017- a 19% drop over the prior year. The cuts vary by institutions (see Figure 1) - as high as 31% in one case- and a few small universities actually received an increase. Overall, this did not bode well with the academic fraternity. Prior to the announcement, a heartfelt appeal was made to maintain public investment The vice chancellors have pleaded their case with the Prime Minister, arguing that further budget cuts would significantly impede institutional operations in the coming years.
