Title Graduate Unemployment in China: One Million Strong and Growing Every Year
Author Rachael Merola - Senior Researcher, OBHE

Abstract

While some say that a college degree is the best insurance against unemployment, China, despite huge efforts, has struggled with joblessness among its growing population of college-educated youth. Conservative estimates predict that at least one million graduates from the past year are unemployed.

Has the world’s most populous nation—with its state capitalism economy and limited democracy—been successful at producing graduates with the skills necessary to fuel growth? Or is a new approach to higher education needed before the nation becomes oversaturated with highly educated but un/under-employed youth?
