The Observatory's Advisory Board

The Observatory's Advisory Board is responsible for the review and approval of major programmes, services and external initiatives undertaken by The Observatory. The Advisory Board provides guidance and recommendations for the strategic and financial directions of The Observatory. The Advisory Board members are proven and experienced leaders from the top echelons of (mainly UK) higher education.

 

drummond bone three picture The Advisory Board is chaired by Professor Sir Drummond Bone, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, UK. Previous positions held by Sir Drummond Bone include President of Universities UK (2005-2007) and Principal of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London. He is also Vice-Chair of the Northern Way, and Chair of its Innovation and Industry Strategy Group.
r brown picture Professor Roger Brown is former Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University, UK. Previous positions held include Chief Executive of the Committee of Directors of Polytechnics and Secretary of the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council, UK.
t bruce picture Dr Tony Bruce is the Director of Policy Development at Universities UK, the representative body of universities and associated colleges. He has worked at Universities UK (formerly known as CVCP) since convergence in 1993 in various policy roles.
c campbell picture Carolyn Campbell is the Associate Director (International) of the UK Quality Assurance Agency. She has contributed to various high-level working groups and committees, including an OECD/UNESCO Working Group developing guidelines for quality provision in cross-border education as well as the UNESCO Global Forum on Quality Assurance, Accreditation and the Recognition of Qualifications.
Professor Aldwyn Cooper is Chief Executive of Regent's College, UK. Prior to his current position, he was Pro Vice-Chancellor, Operations at the University of Glamorgan, UK, and has held positions at educational broadcaster Workhouse Limited, the Open University and Henley Management College, where he was involved in the development of a distance MBA programme.
g davies picture Professor Sir Graeme Davies is Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, UK, and immediate past Chair of the Observatory's Advisory Group. Previous positions held by Sir Graeme include Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Principal of the University of Glasgow.
c ennew picture Professor Christine Ennew is Professor of Marketing at the Nottingham University Business School, UK, and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Internationalisation and Europe). Previously, she was Director of the Division of Business and Management in Malaysia and Director of the Christel de Haan Tourism and Travel Research Institute.
r king picture Professor Roger King is Visiting Research Professor at the Centre for Higher Education Research and Information at the Open University, UK. He was formerly Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside (now the University of Lincoln), UK, and has been a Visiting Fellow at the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and at Australian universities.
d kirkpatrick picture Professor Denise Kirkpatrick is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) at the Open University, UK. She is responsible for leading the production and delivery of the University's learning materials and researching new applications in ICT in supported learning. Professor Kirkpatrick was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Australia's La Trobe University and former president of the Australasian Council on Open, Distance and E-Learning (ACODE).
d laurillard picture Professor Diana Laurillard is Chair of Learning with Digital Technologies at the London Knowledge Lab, the Institute of Education, University of London, UK. Previous positions held include Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning Technologies and Teaching) at the Open University and Head of the E-Learning Strategy Unit at the UK Government's Department for Education and Skills.
r middlehurst picture Professor Robin Middlehurst is Director for Strategy, Research and International at the UK's Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and Professor at Kingston University, UK. Professor Middlehurst led the team which produced the report "The Business of Borderless Education: UK Perspectives", which sparked the formation of The Observatory in 2001.
j tarrant picture Professor John Tarrant is Secretary General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Professor Tarrant was previously Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, UK, and has been involved in international work undertaken by the British Council, the Ford and Rockefellar Foundations, the UK Department for International Development and the Irish Government.
e wagner picture Dr Erin Wagner is Director of the Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education at the University of Hildesheim, Germany. Previously, Dr Wagner was President of the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN) and is currently busy as both an academic and consultant.
